It was incredible that I was in charge of the Intel IoT department this year. For the past year, I have devoted myself to team work and tried to establish a data-driven technology foundation for industrial innovation. The team's strategy is to build silicon platforms and workload consolidation at the edge to implement end-to-end distributed computing in vertical markets. The key to success lies in coordinating the ecosystem of partners and developers so that they can effectively realize their advantages. Our dedicated efforts paid off - in 2017, Intel’s IoT business grew 20%, and continued to maintain strong growth in the first quarter of 2018.

We have seen significant growth in the global IoT market, thanks in part to the dramatic increase in visual applications, especially those using artificial intelligence (AI). These video and video use cases cover almost every market segment in the Internet of Things, including identifying product defects on assembly lines, managing retail inventory, determining equipment maintenance needs in remote areas, and ensuring public safety in cities and airports. These use cases make full use of high-resolution cameras and generate a large amount of data that needs to be aggregated and analyzed.

Facing this kind of expansion data growth, Intel announced the Open VisualOference & Neural Network Optimization Toolkit. The OpenVINOTM Toolkit will quickly track the development of high-performance computer vision and deep learning on the edge side. This is the latest in a full suite of Intel® vision hardware and software products focused on accelerating deep learning and transforming visual data into business insights.

To process high-quality video data, it must be able to quickly analyze the massive data streams near the edge and respond in real time, moving only useful insights asynchronously to the cloud. To efficiently process video data, companies need to find the right solution for every job. Unlike other companies that believe in the "one-size-fits-all" philosophy, Intel believes that the market needs a powerful combination of scalable hardware and software solutions to move into the future of smart data drives. Intel® Vision Products and the OpenVINOTM Toolkit have been used by a wide range of partners worldwide. For example, Dahua* uses it for smart cities and transportation solutions; GE Healthcare* uses it for medical imaging; Hikvision* uses it for industrial and manufacturing safety. Other partner companies include AgentVi*, General Electric's Current*, Dell*, and Honeywell*.

In the visual industry, Intel has conducted extensive and in-depth cooperation with many leading companies in China. According to Dr. Pu Shiliang, senior vice president of Hikvision, “Hikvision is collaborating with Intel to collaborate on end-to-end AI/DL solutions from front-end Intel® MovidiusTM cameras to back-end servers. Customers can also combine the OpenVINOTM Toolkit with devices running AWS GreenGrass for deep learning at the edge.

Technical details

The new OpenVINOTM Toolkit combines a variety of advanced silicon to provide a complete high-performance solution for edge-to-cloud deep learning and video analytics. Through a variety of common software frameworks, such as TensorFlow*, MXNet*, Caffe*, etc., Intel's visual products help developers more easily deploy deep learning and machine vision solutions.

The combination of Intel's vision products and the OpenVINOTM Toolkit provides developers with the flexibility and choice of performance and power consumption to adapt to various IoT infrastructures.

Intel CPUs with integrated graphics have gained widespread adoption, giving developers access to systems that are widely deployed in line with existing architectures and products.

Intel FPGAs provide raw throughput and programming flexibility to quickly adapt to new networks and new applications.

Intel Movidius VPU brings cost efficiency and energy efficiency to restricted environments while providing the performance required for a wide range of applications.
