In the village of Tourouvre-au-Perche in the Norman region of France, the world's first solar panel highway Wattway opened recently. The road is 1 km long and is covered by 2,800 square meters of power panels. The French Minister of Ecology, Ségolène Royal, personally presided over the opening ceremony.

The solar panel road was built at a price of 5 million euros. In a two-year test, it will be used by about 2,000 drivers every day to determine if it can generate enough energy to illuminate the village street with 3,400 villagers. Provide electricity.
In 2014, the Cromery of the Netherlands opened a solar cycle. Despite its constant problems, it has produced 3,000 kWh of energy, enough for ordinary households to supply electricity throughout the year. However, the cost of building this revolving road is enough to buy 520,000 kWh of electricity.
Before the opening of the French solar road, these solar panels have been tested in four car parks across France. The builder is Colas, part of the telecommunications giant Bouygues, and the construction costs are funded by the state.

The Normandy region is not known for its sunny sunshine. The local political center Caen has only 44 days of sunshine throughout the year, while Marseille has 170 days. Royal said she hopes to see a solar panel road every 1,000 kilometers on the French highway. There are 1 million highways in France. But the efficiency of collecting solar energy from these tiled solar panels seems to be far less than the solar panels installed at the slopes such as the roof.
Critics say this is not a cost-effective way to use public funds. Marc Jedliczka, vice president of the Energy Conversion Network (CLER), said: "There is no doubt that this is a technological advancement. But while developing renewable energy, we must also consider cost. Jean-Louis Bal, president of the Renewable Energy Alliance SER, also said: "We have to find a balance between construction costs, power generation and usage. I haven't found an answer yet."
According to Colas, these solar panels are wrapped with resin containing silicon wafers to ensure they are rigid enough to withstand the weight of the car. The company said it hopes to reduce the cost of producing solar panels and will continue with 100 solar panel road projects. Half of them are in France and the other half are abroad.
