Panasonic will develop tomato picking robots to cope with labor shortage

Matsushita revealed on the 16th that it plans to develop tomato picking robots and conduct experimental sales around 2019. The aging population has led to a growing shortage of agricultural labor. The development aims to reduce daytime workloads by enabling automatic picking at night.

Matsushita believes that the market for industrial robots is expected to expand from manufacturing to agriculture and logistics, and is intended to combine with the company's sophisticated precision sensors and automated handling technologies to create a new revenue-generating model.

The picking robot can identify the color of the fruit through sophisticated sensors and cameras, and lock the mature tomatoes. After analyzing the state of the fruit bunch, the robot is responsible for picking up the fruit intact. It is then transported to the cart and the new harvest box is automatically replaced. In addition, Matsushita will develop equipment to check the size, shape and quality of tomatoes for the shipment.

It is expected that after the entry into force of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), the number of agricultural products imported from abroad will increase due to the cancellation or reduction of tariffs. This R&D has been selected as a pilot project for the country's “Innovative Technology Development and Emergency Development” as a TPP countermeasure. . R&D expenses are subsidized.

Matsushita also plans to use the role of communication technology to develop a system that determines the harvest period based on the state of crops in the greenhouse and regulates temperature and fertilizer to an optimal state. Yikang, the director of the Robotics Promotion Office, said: "It is difficult to gain the benefits of picking robots alone. We want to develop a system that can produce many high-quality tomatoes into a business."
