MIT develops quantum dot LEDs that cover all visible spectra

Topics: Technology Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a common structure for producing organic quantum dot LED devices with emission spectra covering the entire visible wavelength range. Such quantum dot LEDs (QD-LEDs) are expected to be applied to the field of RGB flat panel displays.

The research and development team member Anikeeva said that because this method allows each quantum dot to be processed independently, the same device structure can be achieved for all quantum dot colors. In the future, this contact printing method can be used to produce RGB flat panel display, which can easily realize red, green and blue quantum dot pixel accumulation.

Thanks to the quantum dot ZnCdS and ZnCdSe materials, the team extended the color gamut of QD-LEDs to deep blue and deep red, while the carrier-transporting materials were identical to those of green and orange devices. Hybrid organic QD-LEDs have the advantages of solid color, flexibility and low cost.

MIT's Polina Anikeeva, Jonathan Halpert, and his colleagues used colloidal quantum dot synthesis (using CdSe, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnCdS, ZnCdSe alloys) for each visible spectrum through different pathways. Researchers can use the same organic substrate to grow each quantum dot category.
