LED industry: huge market space needs to break through multiple bottlenecks

Under the trend of energy saving and environmental protection, semiconductor lighting (LED) is becoming a huge emerging industry in the market due to its high brightness and low energy consumption.

“LED can achieve energy saving of about 70% in landscape lighting, and energy saving of about 40% can be achieved in tunnel lighting and road lighting. And according to the Haitz law of LED industry, the price of LED can be reduced to 10% every 10 years. One of them can improve performance by 20 times.” At the 2009 LED Industry Development International Cooperation Forum hosted by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the China Trade News, Zibo, director of the Beijing Semiconductor Lighting Technology Promotion Center, said that the development of LED Full of confidence.

According to Zibo, as of the end of 2008, China's LED industry has about 3,000 enterprises, covering all areas of the upper, middle and lower reaches, and the output value of the entire industry is about 70 billion yuan. At present, China's LED industry has entered the stage of independent research and development and innovation, forming a relatively complete industrial chain structure and a model of production, education and research integration.

Zibo and other industry experts believe that as a representative of the new energy industry, LED has broad market prospects; in addition to applications in backlights, displays, etc., LED can also be widely used in roads, tunnels, subways, underground parking and refueling Stations and other outdoor areas, and gradually enter the ordinary residential lighting city often with the launch of the Ministry of Science and Technology "Ten Cities and Ten Thousand Pilot Project", the LED market is expected to expand dramatically. According to the analysis of relevant institutions, by 2010, the output value of China's LED industry will exceed 150 billion yuan.

While full of hope, industry experts believe that the LED industry needs to achieve sustainable and healthy development, and it is urgent to break through multiple bottlenecks.

Liu Shiping, deputy secretary-general of the China Lighting Society, believes that the lack of standards is a huge obstacle to the current development of the LED industry. Due to the lack of uniform industry standards, the product specifications of different manufacturers are different. There are many kinds of related products in the LED market, and there are no good or bad products. There is no basis for product quality evaluation, which directly affects the healthy development of the industry.

At the same time, the cost of LED products is relatively high, and the actual life span is short. This makes it difficult for LED products to gain the favor of ordinary consumers and affects the popularity of LEDs in general residential lighting.

The lack of core technology is another bottleneck in the development of LED in China. At present, most of the core patents in the LED field are in the hands of major companies such as Nichia, Toyota, CREE, and OSRAM. Although China has obtained about 20,000 LED-related patents as of the end of last year, most of them are concentrated in downstream applications, packaging and other fields, with peripheral inventions and utility models as the mainstay.

Due to the lack of core technology, China's LED development is uneven upstream and downstream. Most enterprises are small in scale and low in technology. They have not yet formed an influential independent brand, and the industrial structure is unreasonable.

Zibo believes that talent shortage is also one of the most prominent problems in China's semiconductor lighting companies. Although as of July 2009, China's semiconductor lighting industry employs more than 800,000 people, it is estimated that from 2010 to 2012, the demand for new talents in the industry will reach 600,000.
