Munich, Germany, March 2, 2015 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) has released a series of highly rugged 650V IGBTs that enable high-speed switching in automobiles for maximum efficiency. The TRENCHSTOPTM5 AUTO IGBTs are AEC-Q compliant and reduce power in electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid (HEV) applications such as on-board charging, power factor correction (PFC), DC/DC and DC/AC conversion. The new IGBT series block voltage is 50V higher than previous generation automotive grade IGBTs. At the same time, due to the reduced switching losses and conduction losses, the new IGBT series offers lower junction temperatures and lower case temperatures in the same application compared to alternative technologies. This not only improves the reliability of the device, but also minimizes cooling requirements.
By using the TRENCHSTOPTM 5 AUTO IGBT, electric vehicle designers can realize the added benefit of increased device efficiency, which can extend the cruising range or reduce the battery size. For hybrid vehicles, increased efficiency means lower total fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. In addition, the superior performance of the TRENCHSTOPTM 5 AUTO IGBT device allows it to enter applications where MOSFET technology is currently used, and offers designers a wide selection based on different semiconductor chip technologies.
The TRENCHSTOPTM 5 AUTO IGBT series devices are rated at 40A or 50A and come with a single discrete IGBT and an IGBT that can be packaged with Infineon's ultra-fast "Rapid" silicon diodes. For either of these two products, Infineon offers both H5 HighSpeed ​​and F5 HighSpeed ​​FAST products, depending on whether optimizing the switching speed and achieving maximum efficiency are the primary design criteria.
Example of efficiency improvement advantage
For typical PFC circuits for on-board chargers, replacing the current state-of-the-art technology with the TRENCHSTOPTM 5 AUTO IGBT has shown an increase in efficiency from 97.5% to 97.9%. If it is a 3.3kW charger, this is equivalent to a 13W reduction in power loss. Assuming a charging time of 5 hours, this is equivalent to a 30g reduction in CO2 emissions per charge cycle.
Availability
