BMW abandoned Android car operating system for Apple

At the BMW Quarterly earnings conference call in November 2015, CEO Harald Kruger said that BMW will support Google's Android Auto operating system in the future, and will also support another CarPlay system from Apple. But now look at the company's plans that BMW seems to have reconsidered. In an interview, BMW executives said they would give up support for the Android Auto system in the future.

BMW abandoned Android car operating system for Apple

At the 2017 MWC Mobile World Congress, Dieter May, senior vice president of digital services and business in BMW, said in an interview with TechCrunch that BMW will continue to support Apple's CarPlay system in the future, but will abandon Google's Android Auto. For this reason, BMW said that in the future, it hopes to better control the user's operation interface, so there is not enough space for the Android Auto system.

Currently, BMW is developing its own ConnectedDrive platform, a cloud-based service that allows users to control the basic functions of their vehicles through their smartphones. In fact, if BMW continues to work with Google, it can be integrated into features such as voice control in the future.

What is disappointing is that BMW will give up support for Android Auto in the future. It seems that some automakers are discussing internally whether they should continue to support third-party operating systems, or use different services based on their own systems. At present, the auto manufacturers' own technology is still the mainstream trend, and if the entire industry changes in the future, it will take several years.
