The industry-leading dual-core C2000 Delfino MCUs are pin and software compatible, providing scalable designs for variable speed drives, frequency converters, power converters and renewable energy applications.

Beijing, August 27, 2014 -- Texas Instruments (TI) today announced the launch of the new C2000? Delfino? 32-bit F2837xS microcontroller (MCU), bringing a powerful single-core series for industrial real-time control design product. These single-core MCUs are the industry's first to offer four 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and provide accurate feedback in power control applications. They are compatible with the recently released dual-core C2000 Delfino F2837xD MCU pins and software, while also helping to accelerate the development process from high-performance industrial control applications to medium-control designs. In addition, for those customers who use the previous Delfino F2833x MCU family, the Delfino F2837xS MCU is a next-generation single-core solution. Developers can transition their existing investments in F2833x MCUs to software-compatible F2837xS MCUs to deliver higher CPU performance and more advanced analog and control peripherals.

Features and benefits of the F2837xS MCU:

The combination of the C28x and the Real-Time Control Accelerator (CLA) combines 400 MIPS of floating-point performance to manage multiple control tasks quickly and efficiently. The C28x CPU is further accelerated in trigonometry and complex mathematical operations:

o Quickly execute triangulation algorithms used in transformation and control functions with the new Triangular Mathematical Unit (TMU) hardware accelerator integrated in the C28x kernel and automatically executed in the compiler.

Use the Viterbi Complex Unit (VCU II) hardware accelerator, also integrated in the C28x kernel and automatically executed in the compiler, to accelerate complex mathematical operations common in coding communication applications.

Intelligent system partitioning by offloading highly demanding control loop analysis from the main CPU (C28x core) to the CLA, resulting in additional bandwidth and allowing the host processor to focus on other systems such as system diagnostics, application management or down-conversion control loops task.

Precise feedback in power control applications with four 16-bit ADCs – the first in the industry for single-core MCUs.

Can improve system throughput, such as monitoring the three-phase voltage and current of the motor, while completing the software decoding high-frequency resolver feedback.

Maximize system-level integration and save bill of materials costs through other high-integrity analog and control peripherals such as sigma-delta demodulator, comparators, digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and many control and communication peripherals.

Eight debugged delta-sigma channels are available for threshold comparison and are configured with a seamless interface for the TI AMC1204 isolated delta-sigma modulator.

Easy migration from traditional F2833x MCUs. Using the same C28x core and many of the same peripherals, the previous high-performance C2000 MCUs are compatible with the new Delfino F2837xS MCU software, providing more signal processing bandwidth, better flash performance, and advanced analog and control peripherals. .

Accelerate time-to-market and reduce development costs by creating pin- and software-compatible architectures for dual-core Delfino F2837xD MCUs and future devices by creating different performance grades in the new F2837xS MCU family.

• Centralized software development through examples, header files, application libraries, etc. in controlSUITE® software (available for free download at ti.com).

New tools make development easier

Because the Delfino F2837xS MCUs are scalable and compatible with the Delfino F2837xD MCU, they share the same development platform, the Delfino F2837xD Experimenter Kit. The Delfino F2837xD Experimenter Kit is based on the common C2000 controlCARD form factor, allowing designers to use this controlCARD with the previously released C2000 application suite.

Availability

Samples of the full-featured C2000 Delfino F28377S 32-bit MCU (TMX320F28377S) are available now. With the integration of TMS32028376S, TMS320F28375S and TMS320F28374S with different memory and peripherals, TI offers designers more choice. In addition, developers can use the modular controlCARD (TMDXCNCD28377D's Delfino F2837xD Experimenter Kit Expansion Base (TMDXDOCK28377D) to evaluate the new Delfino MCU, or buy the controlCARD separately.
