The QNX CAR platform already supports two of the most popular open standards for mobile application development - HTML5 and OpenGL® ES. The new 2.1 platform will also support Android applications, as well as applications and human machine interfaces (HMIs) built on the Qt® 5 application framework.

To maximize reliability, the QNX CAR platform 2.1 for infotainment systems runs Android apps in a separate application container, just like HTML5 apps. The sandbox method implements the partitioning of the application environment and the human-machine interface, and protects the human-machine interface and the entire system from unpredictable network content interference.
Support for the Qt 5 application framework provides a flexible, high-performance option for creating applications and human-machine interfaces. Qt 5 leverages the benefits of OpenGL ES2.0 hardware acceleration to deliver optimal graphics performance. Human interface developers also have the flexibility to choose native C / C + + or JavaScript scripting engine. In addition, it supports the concept of a state machine, making it easier for developers to graphically model and design complex, event-driven human-machine interfaces that meet automotive manufacturer specifications.
Developers can also build a complete human-machine interface using the HTML5 framework integrated into the QNX CAR platform. The framework includes an optimized WebKit-based HTML5 engine that supports audio and video, geolocation, WebSockets, offline applications, session storage, canvas and CSS3 and JavaScript. Optimization includes pixel-accurate scaling, physics-based scrolling, and high-performance panning (ideal for maps and navigation). Developers can also create human-machine interfaces using third-party design tools such as Elektrobit EB GUIDE and Crank StoryboardTM suites.

The QNX CAR Platform 2.1 for infotainment systems introduces additional improvements to increase flexibility and performance, including improved power management, faster startup time optimization, and support including Freescale® i.MX 6Dual and i.MX 6Quad. More hardware platforms, including NVIDIA® Tegra® 3, Texas Instruments OMAPTM 5 and Texas Instruments Jacinto 5 Eco.
