NHK piloted a fuel cell portable power system and LED lighting in a live broadcast of the Toyako Summit in Hokkaido, which opened on July 7, 2008.
The fuel cell portable power system is identical to the product released by NHK in February 2008 and was jointly developed by NHK and Hitachi. This is an active direct methanol fuel cell using a pump and fan. With an output power of approximately 100 W, a 500 mL fuel cartridge (40% methanol fuel) can generate electricity for approximately two and a half hours. In addition to two XLR4 pin (DC16.8V) output terminals that can power TV cameras, they can also charge Li-ion rechargeable battery packs for two TV cameras.
In the past, generators were often used when disaster reporting and secret exploration required long-term outdoor video recording. The generator weighs more than ten kg and the output power is above 1kW. The fuel cell system weighs only 6kg (without fuel) but has an output of only 100W. SEO, the chief engineer of the Technology Center of the NHK Broadcasting Technology Bureau, who tried to use the system, said that it would take about 500W to drive a complete set of relay equipment such as cameras, lighting and displays. Therefore, this fuel cell system is only used for the power supply of one LED illumination lamp this time.
In addition, since the fuel uses methanol, it cannot directly contribute to the reduction of CO2. However, in the future, if hydrogen and bioethanol made from renewable energy can be used as fuel, it is expected to contribute to environmental protection.
LED lighting for extended drive time
LED lighting was jointly developed by NHK and Toshiba Lighting, which consumes about 1/3 of the original tungsten lamp, but achieves the same brightness as the tungsten lamp (Figure 2). When outdoor video recording is performed at night, battery consumption can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the studio also has the effect of reducing the power consumption for lighting and preventing the room temperature from rising, thereby reducing the power consumption of the air conditioner. In addition, the lifespan is as long as 50,000 to 60,000 hours, and it is not necessary to worry about being broken after 7 to 8 years. The life of a halogen lamp is only about 300 hours.
Although the power consumption is only 130W, when the projection circle diameter is 1m, it has a center luminance of 1600lx or more, and when the projection circle diameter is 3m, it has a center luminance of 600lx or more. This time, a total of 45 RGB three-color LEDs are used, and white light with an illumination color temperature of 5600 to 6000K is used. Moreover, the LED illumination achieves an average color rendering evaluation index 85 required by a television studio or the like. At present, there are still problems in that it is difficult to obtain uniform diffused light and color expression. However, NHK said that these problems can be solved by improving the filters installed in front of the lamps, etc., and there is basically no problem in actual use.
