The media interface based on semiconductor lighting technology is a contemporary, art form with digital, changeable and interactive interactions that has emerged in the field of architectural design in recent years. As the most digital media lighting technology in the field of lighting, LED has become the first choice for media interface design. The visual and lighting academic team of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University has carried out research related to this series of semiconductor lighting and Expo application projects through the National 863 Program, provincial and ministerial level, and has undertaken the overall planning of the night scene lighting of the Shanghai World Expo Park. The indoor and outdoor lighting design of the Expo Cultural Center, the innovative design of the LED digital media interface in the two entrance halls of the West and South of the Expo Cultural Center, has become the most characteristic and challenging work. The creative design and implementation comes directly from the design professional teaching base - the architectural light environment laboratory. For many years, the teacher has been adhering to the development direction of experimental teaching, not only to build the laboratory into an experimental base for academic research, but also to become a technological innovation. research base. To this end, through classroom teaching and installation work, nearly 70 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the design and experimental work of the Expo project. With their ingenuity and innovative talents, after nearly two years of hard work, design ideas are based on experiments and teaching, not only to explore a new teaching ideas, but also to open up a new experimental design method.

1. Experimental design - driving research with scientific research and injecting innovative ideas

According to the lighting design concept of the Expo Cultural Center, the West and South Entrance Halls serve as the main distribution area. From the perspective of vision and illumination, we hope to give the audience a clear sense of direction and space, and use some colored light to adjust the atmosphere. The starting point of the design is that the LED screen constitutes the artistic interface as the visual focus of the hall. The digital media interface has been explored for two years and finally achieved through three phases. The first stage: to arrange the production of LED screens to form the art of the students, select some of the more excellent work in the laboratory LED screen for experimental display. The second stage: the two student assignments displayed in the laboratory are approved by the owners of the Expo Cultural Center and are intended to be applied to the two entrance halls of their venues. The third stage: in the construction site of the two entrance halls, laboratory teachers, students and LED production companies, on-site construction personnel to install and debug the art installation.

This research topic involves the intersection of multiple disciplines, including semiconductor technology, materials science, architectural construction methods, visual and visual perception theory, image display technology, media technology, and building integration. The main focus of the research is to apply semiconductor lighting technology and image dynamic combination technology to architectural design, and to establish an innovative integration method of media interface. In order to improve the architectural design level of the media interface, change the single expression of the current LED media interface, strengthen the organic combination of LED and architectural construction practices, enrich the visual design of the architectural interface, through experimental research: 1. The base layer LED light-emitting lattice pixels Pitch, optical parameters and control methods; 2. Optical medium layer material structure and optical characteristics; 3. Photographic brightness, chromaticity and other photometric characteristics; 4. Optimize the image quality and visual art effect of the dynamic image media interface.

2. Generation methods and construction systems - to achieve design and explore innovative practices

At the western entrance to the Expo Cultural Center, visitors can see the large-scale digital media work, "The Dream of the East." The media interface construction system is composed of a homogeneous LED base layer, a plastic film optical medium layer, and a frosted glass image bearing layer. The LED base layer is composed of LED light-emitting lattices with a pitch of 40mm×40mm. The power of the LED light-emitting lattice is 200W/m2, the refreshing frequency is ≥1920Hz, and the light-emitting angle of the LED (horizontal viewing angle and vertical viewing angle) are both ≥120 degrees, and then passed. The LED controller controls the brightness and color change of the LED light-emitting lattice; the plastic film optical medium layer is laid by a white translucent plastic film and a black plastic film (the actual use of black and white garbage bags in the works), and the black and white texture can be based on Depending on the artistic effect of the expression, the area should be consistent with the coverage area of ​​the LED base layer; the frosted glass image bearing layer is a frosted glass of ordinary glass. The animation of the LED screen changes and the pattern formed by the plastic bag itself, and the combination of the two, and the frosted glass makes the image comparable, like the traditional Chinese ink painting.

At the south entrance, viewers can see another digital media art work, “Bloom.” The LED base layer and the glass bearing surface of the interface are the same as described above, and the optical medium layer is pressed using a tinplate die. The tinplate itself is opaque. After engraving, the center of the pattern is stretched so that it protrudes from 0 to 5 cm to form a gap. Light is emitted from the back through the slit, and finally a blooming rose pattern appears on the frosted glass.

Different from the existing media interface, the design uses a low-pixel, large-pitch LED as the base layer, adding an intermediate structure level—the optical medium and the surface imaging material—to a total of three structural levels for architectural design and combination. The design breaks the single interface mode of the flat media LED display, which makes the display content richer, the overall effect is better, the screen cost is more economical, the manufacturing process and the control system are convenient, and the LED light spot is directly exposed to the screen surface and the surface brightness. High, easy to produce glare and other shortcomings.
