The rise of mainland panel makers and price-cutting competition have caused LCD prices to collapse. To this end, LGD, Samsung Display, Sharp and other international manufacturers have accelerated the OLED layout.
Of the three new iPhones that Apple launched this year, two of them use OLEDs to replace traditional LCDs. LGD was affected by LCD prices and suffered serious losses. It regards OLED as the only solution to save its operations. It recently broke Samsung’s monopoly and became the second OLED screen supplier for Apple’s iPhone.
And Taiwanese manufacturers such as AUO and Innolux have successively invested in the development of MiniLED backlight technology. Are there any winners? Qiu Yubin, vice president of research at Witview, believes that Taiwanese manufacturers' hope of maintaining international competitiveness lies in the IT panel product line.
Qiu Yubin pointed out that the MiniLED technology that Taiwanese manufacturers have been actively working on recently is still an enhanced technology that requires LCD panels. Compared with display technologies with a new architecture such as OLED, Taiwanese manufacturers are indeed investing in new display technologies to a certain extent. Slower than panel factories in other regions.
However, Qiu Yubin believes that even if the new OLED technology continues to develop vigorously, the main penetration areas are still limited to applications such as mobile phones and TVs. The penetration of IT applications is very limited. Taiwan manufacturers still have the opportunity to strengthen the original layout through MiniLED. The relatively deep IT panel product line maintains a certain market competitiveness in this segment.
Taiwanese manufacturers have deep confidence in MiniLED and firmly believe that this technology can replace OLED in a few years' time. The industry bluntly said that OLED has flaws in physical principles, and LEDs are more in line with the essence of physical principles.
Domestic panel manufacturers are making every effort to sprint MiniLED, including products such as automotive, TV, or IT panels, and most of them already have technologies that can be mass-produced and shipped. In addition to competing with OLED, it is also paving the way for the higher-end MicroLED application market.
MicroLED is regarded as the next-generation display technology, but so far, including issues such as massive transfer, yield maintenance, and subsequent testing and maintenance, are still hurdles to be broken through.
